Good news for the Member-Owners of the Victoria Health Co-op AND our patients

By Vanessa Hammond

Last month we told readers in James Bay that our income at the Co-op Health Centre, 547 Michigan St, was no longer covering costs. We explained that our revenue is a percentage of the income the doctors receive from the Medical Services Plan. When they retire, move away, need to take days off for their own health or to care for family, their income drops, our income drops.

We explained that at times such as this, the member-owners (about 500 of us) work very, very hard to raise funds to cover the shortfall.

You responded! Thank you.

We took our message wider. We had our usual article in this publication, a front-page article in the Times Colonist (thank you Karen Calland and Amy Smart), an interview on Global TV (thank you Neetu Garcha) and on CBC On The Island (thank you Robyn Burns and team). We did a presentation at the James Bay New Horizons.

You responded! Thank you.

Over the past few weeks, over 20 of our patients at the Co-op Health Centre have become member-owners of the Victoria Health Co-op ($50 lifetime membership). And several wonderful people in the community have made donations to our Charity and received charitable donation receipts.

And three local businesses and three other community organizations have been very helpful. Ask us who they are!

We explained that we started the Victoria Health Co-op in 2008 to provide Complementary and Integrative treatments (reflexology, energy work, medical exercise teaching, shamanic support, medical herbalism, Alexander Technique teaching and osteopathic practice) for our member-owners. To enjoy this benefit, book your appointment, at our Monthly Members Wellness Clinic June 25. If you are a member, please call Jan Yoder, our Clinic Co-ordinator, at 250-483-5503. Leave her a message and she'll return your call. Just state your name and telephone number and the name of the practitioner you'd like to see and if there are scheduling restrictions you'd like Jan to know about. Calls are listed on a "first come, first served" basis, so call soon to reserve your spot. Jan will return your call as soon as she is able. If you are not yet a member, please join first, then call Jan.

And what are we doing to bring new medical practitioners to the Co-op Health Centre? We are advertising, as always, for doctors, applying for a Nurse Practitioner (NP), preparing funding proposals.

What can YOU do?

Join the Victoria Health Co-op! Sign our proposal for a Nurse Practitioner. Give us YOUR ideas. Volunteer – we desperately need a volunteer co-ordinator. Donate to our charity, the Creating Community Wellness Society. Again, THANK YOU for all the support. It is still a struggle because of the lack of doctors, but your support makes a huge difference. Thank you, Vanessa 250.415.9272 vichealthcoop@gmail.com(Chair) Chris 250 516 5831mather01@telus.net(Treasurer)
