Mark Your Calendars and Grab Your Bags for the James Bay Market 2017 Season Opening

By Jessica Duncan

All together now – Phew! That collective sigh of relief as this seemingly interminable winter ebbs into the recesses of our consciousness, making way for what we hope will be a truly glorious spring and summer. At the risk of sounding like all other transplants from anywhere East of the Rockies, this winter has been brutal, and if I wanted a real Canadian winter, I would have stayed in Ontario. But, with Spring officially sprung, it is time to dig out the re-usable cloth shopping bags and gear up for your weekly trips to the James Bay Community Market.

From May 6 – September 30, you will be able to engage in your favourite weekly activity of shopping for locally produced food and artisanal creations at the corner of Menzies and Superior Streets. The James Bay Market is gearing up again, once more, with a fabulous selection of farmers, bakers, brewers, jammers, and craftspeople, not to mention live musicians to serenade you while you shop or stop for a cup of locally roasted Mile O coffee and a bite to eat from one of the food vendors. There will be many familiar vendors as well as some new ones offering something for everyone. Once more you will be able to buy fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and flowers produced in the Saanich Peninsula as well as from our own James Bay backyard farmer, and there will be an array of soap, jewellery, art and other things of beauty created right here in Victoria. As with all farmers’ markets, the James Bay Community Market is here to help you reduce your carbon footprint while nourishing your body and soul.

Throughout the summer season, there will be various lively events and activities to celebrate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Canada’s 150 birthday, to name a few.

So, mark your calendars for May 6 and get ready to shake off the long, cold winter. Grab your bags and head on down to your community farmers’ market where you can catch up with so many familiar faces and get acquainted with some new ones. Remember, you are an important part of the James Bay Community, and it is people like you who will make the market a success for the 23 year in a row.

The James Bay Market runs from 9am-3pm every Saturday from May 6 – September 30. It is located at the corner of Menzies and Superior. There is street parking available and the market is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
