COOL Annual Strawberry Tea

By trudy chiswell

As spring blossoms flutter to the ground in pink snow, the Strawberry Tea at Church of Our Lord is just around the corner. Fresh strawberries, whipped cream and moist cake makes the most delicious strawberry shortcake ready for you to enjoy. Come enjoy an afternoon tea with friends June 17 from 1pm. to 3:30 pm. in the church hall at 626 Blanshard Street. Waitresses in crisp white aprons will greet and lead you to your table to enjoy scrumptious dessert with a cup of tea in china tea cups.

Since 2001, Church of Our Lord on Blanshard Street has hosted a Strawberry Tea in the spring to celebrate spring and raise money for worthwhile causes. Last year the money raised went to the Fort McMurray relief fund. This year all proceeds from the event will be going toward famine relief in South Sudan.

After tea, enjoy a self-guided tour of this national historic church. Built in 1876 Church of Our Lord has been in Victoria for 141 years. It is graced with beautiful stained glass windows, an Appleton pipe organ dating back to 1827 and a magnificent hammerbeam ceiling. The organ is believed to have lived in two different churches in New England before being brought “around the Horn” to a church in San Francisco in 1867 and then coming to Victoria in late 1875, the gift of Sir James Douglas.

The church is steeped in history. Bishop Edward Cridge built the church in 1876 with the donation of land from Sir James Douglas. He was an amazing hands-on man with a vision for Victoria. Bishop Cridge was instrumental in the establishment of an orphanage in the city that became the Cridge Centre for the Family on Hillside St., the Royal Jubilee Hospital, the YMCA and many other organizations we enjoy in the city today.

After you have finished your tea and strawberry shortcake go into the church proper to enjoy the beauty of the place or just sit and enjoy a quiet place to reflect.

There are many events downtown June 17. After enjoying lunch at the Aboriginal Festival around the museum, stroll over to Blanchard Street to have a little rest as you enjoy the scrumptious strawberry shortcake and tea at Church of Our Lord.
