A Pleasance

A Pleasance

By Hazel Ross

In the Park at twilight

Rugged grey-barked trees

Surround a pond

Where creatures dwell

An owl sits silent in a tree

           Listening

To hear its prey moving

Under dried leaves

A deer steps on a dried branch

       The owl hoots

Nature’s creatures are stilled

          With fear

Above the pond dragonflies

Perform mating rituals

        manoeuvring

Transparent blue wings

It is the pond that

Takes us beyond earth

Reflecting a galaxy of stars

A semblance of peace and

         Mystery.
