Robert and Catriona Wojtas have owned the James Bay pharmacy for upwards of six years. They have now expanded their health services beyond the four walls of their newly-renovated pharmacy into a Wellness Centre on the ground floor of the James Bay Community Project at 547 Michigan St., right next to the Whiteye Community Health Care Centre.
While the pharmaceutical dispensary will remain at its current location in Parliament Mews at the corner of Menzies and Superior streets, “The idea behind [the new location] is to provide wellness opportunities for the community, as well as provide pharmaceutical services in conjunction with the physicians” at the Whiteye clinic. Currently Robert is working on a pilot project with the doctors at the new satellite location, and that will expand in the future.
“It’s becoming more prevalent to have a pharmacist as part of a wellness team,” working collaboratively with physicians, says Catriona, adding that the new arrangement allows Pharmasave James Bay to offer integrated patient care and provide more support to the community.
One of the ways Robert and Catriona see this expansion helping Pharmasave James Bay serve its customers better is seamless access to pharmaceutical expertise.
“Right now, at the store, we provide counseling and consultation, but this provides an opportunity for patients to have more in-depth, timely consultation in conjunction with their visit to the doctor,” adds Catriona. Pharmasave will now have the space to give presentations and seminars on health topics, and run clinics, such as those for flu, high blood pressure, diabetes, and travel health.
In the new location, the pharmacist will have an office and the rest of the space (the former community library), while open-space, can be configured like a lecture hall with a projector and some chairs or around a board table. The space will also be available for rental by community groups. There are even plans for a yoga program, overseen by a Pharmasave staffer who is also a yoga instructor!
