Victoria Health Co-op
By Vanessa Hammond
VHC invites you to get to know your local co-ops at our first Co-op Café on Saturday, September 29 from 11 - 12:30pm at James Bay New Horizons (234 Menzies St.). Every month we will feature a local co-operative that is doing good things for our community.
We welcome Coastal Community Credit Union (CCCU) as our co-host of the September Co-op Café. As a financial institution focusing firmly on the Island, CCCU is an active partner in a number of community ventures. Find out why they are expanding in our area and what new services they offer.
From September 2018 until June 2019, each monthly session will provide an opportunity for you to learn more about how co-operatives are making a difference in Victoria. The Co-op Café events will feature retail, transportation, housing, food, social justice and additional financial co-ops in our community. We will also be hosting a political panel in March, and our January Cafe will be a movie night with popcorn. As a group, we will explore many interesting topics.
We invite you join the discussion and share your views about co-ops and how we can contribute to our communities. Enjoy refreshments and good company. Say "thank you" to the City of Victoria for sponsorship.
Please email or call us with your suggestions, or leave a note for the Co-op at the front desk of the James Bay Community Project. For more information, check out our website, victoriahealthcooperative.com or call Vanessa at 250.415.9272 or email email@example.com.
Launching the Co-op Recipe Book
September 29 will also be the launch of our new Co-op Recipe Book. Help us to decide on the criteria for inclusion for an online cookbook which will be updated throughout the year. This excellent idea was proposed at the Annual General Meeting in March. We hope people will be interested in helping us bring it to reality - calling all health, nutrition and cooking enthusiasts to share their recipes! Give project leader Bruce Livingstone your suggestions at the Co-op Café or email our team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Support the VHC and our Wellness Community
Thank you to our dedicated volunteers: Many thanks to our volunteers who have committed their time and passion to the VHC, and to those who new additions to our team. We are always looking for volunteers (as a member, you are also an owner!) to initiate and implement new projects.
Become a Co-op Member: Give us your voice and let us give you the benefits of being a member-owner. As a co-op, our ability to serve our member-owners and our community comes directly from our membership. When you join us, you strengthen our voice, our influence (such as the focus on wellness rather than waiting until we become ill or injured). When you join, you guide and enable us to provide the services most needed in our community. We ask you for three things: your voice and active involvement, your purchase of a $50 membership share, and a commitment to some ongoing support (This could be $10 a month to as much as you wish!) As a member-owner you receive updates on our activities as a co-operative – you will be well informed about our plans, influence our direction, and participate in our activities. Still unsure about joining? Let’s talk. Contact VHC Chair, Vanessa Hammond at email@example.com or call 250.415.9272.
Monthly Members’ Wellness Clinics – Wonderful Wellness Practitioners donate their time and expertise and Member-Owners reciprocate according to their capacity.
Health Access Fund – Supports ongoing treatments for Member-Owners with limited resources. Funding is supported by donations to Creating Community Wellness Society.
Support the Wellness Charity: We need more volunteers to support the Creating Community Wellness Society – have you thought about donating your time, expertise and enthusiasm to help us serve our community even better? We are currently looking for volunteers to engage in the activities of CCWS and work closely with the Wellness Practitioners and Co-op experts in the Victoria Health Co-ops. If you are interested in becoming a VHC Board Member and to discuss upcoming opportunities, please contact our Chair, Vanessa, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 250.415.9272.
