Poem: Ken's Winter Birds

Walking in the neighbourhood
Flashes of deep blue identify
Three raucous Steller’s Jay
Announcing their presence with

Raspy shaack, shaack, shaack
Taking  turns tearing apart
A hornet’s nest high in a Gary Oak
Searching for their next meal

A bevy of  short-tailed Quail
Moving in slow dignified
Hesitant regal steps on the lawn
Finding insects and seeds

Under the eaves
A tiny shy winter Wren
Finds shelter free from
Wind and rain and chaos.

Wild birds have adapted well to city life
Meanwhile their behaviours
Continue the dance of time.
