Come Play with Us in the Park
By Nigel Pieloth
The Victoria Lawn Bowling Club celebrates its 109th birthday this year. Situated in beautiful Beacon Hill Park, the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club has a long and proud history and was inducted into the Victoria Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. Originally called the Beacon Hill Bowling Club, the name changed to Victoria Lawn Bowling Club in 1914. At first just the men bowled, then women in 1921, with the men and women joining forces in 1981.
There have been many other changes to the club over the years, all the while remembering the club’s long history and achievements, with each new member bringing something unique and special to the mix. One such change is from playing bowls in white clothing only to becoming a quite colourful club at the afternoon draw.
Another recent innovation at the club, has been the introduction of croquet which takes place year-round.
The club also boasts social activities after the bowling season, which usually runs April to October. These include cribbage, mah-jong, bridge, a book club, women’s luncheon, and other special events. The Christmas Party is always a big hit with each organising committee bringing something new every year.
As an annual member, you are able to participate in all these activities year-round. The level of involvement is entirely up to you, whether you chose to become an active member helping to run the club or as someone who needs that special place to unwind – or both!
Lawn bowling takes place every day during the season. The mainstay of the season is the social afternoon draw, where members and sometimes visitors are drawn into random teams of two, three, sometimes four, or singles, to play a set number of turns. A typical game lasts about two hours.
For those who are unable to make afternoons, evening draws, leagues, and just getting together to bowl, are also available. During the summer on Friday evening, the club welcomes members of the wider community to try their hand at bowling.
Lawn bowling tournaments are held throughout the season. Club tournaments are played in a friendly spirit and promote healthy competition, providing a safe place to improve your bowling skills and team cooperation.
Inter-club tournaments take your skills to the next level, where those who wish to play in teams (or singles) against other clubs from Victoria sign-up with an experienced skip.
The club also plays host to other events throughout the year. Rental opportunities for corporate events have become very popular in recent years. Lawn Summer Nights, a charity fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis, has been a big hit at the club with spots for teams selling out within the first few days.
At the beginning of April, the club will open its’ doors for one and all to come and try their hand at bowling and croquet. Members and coaches will be on hand to introduce you to the club and activities. Bring your flat soled shoes to the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club on either the 7 or 8 April, 1 to 3 pm. Hospitality provided.
