Health Co-op: A huge step forward (and back)

By Vanessa Hammond
We are delighted to be getting back to our original focus of enhancing the wellness of our members and community. This is possible thanks to having sold the medical practice (the Co-op Health Centre) to the Whiteye Health Centre. We understand that all or most of the patients will continue to receive care from the existing family physicians and others joining the practice. For more information on the newly named Whiteye Health Centre you may want to contact the new owner, Dr. Troy McLeod.

We wish the very best for the patients, the medical office assistants and the physicians as they take the health centre into this new phase.

Although it was very costly in terms of dollars and energy, we, the members of the Victoria Health Co-op, are proud that we supported the medical practice for almost ten years, serving up to 7,400 patients. We are very relieved that we can now get back to our original focus on the wellness of our members and the community. Our community outreach focus for 2018 will be “Supporting your path to wellness.”

Through our working agreement with Whiteye, we will continue to have access to the spaces we currently use for individual wellness care during the week, and the larger space one Sunday each month for the Members Wellness Clinic. We are also very pleased to have a new community partner. In their own words: "Pharmasave James Bay will be creating a Community Wellness Space at the James Bay Community Project when the area currently occupied by the library is vacant. This space will be available for use by community wellness programs and initiatives (such as those offered by the Victoria Health Co-op). In addition, Pharmasave James Bay and Whiteye Community Health Centre (formerly the Co-op Health Centre) will be working together to provide increased clinical services to the community of James Bay."

Annual General Meeting

To learn more, have a voice in our future, participate in a question and answer session with Mayor Lisa Helps, and enjoy the annual draw for gifts from many co-ops in Victoria, please come to our Annual General Meeting and Victoria Co-op Day. We’ll be at the James Bay New Horizons located at 234 Menzies St from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on March 10.

And something new

The Creating Community Wellness Society has received a wonderful gift, the piece of art work “Our Gift” from Coast Salish artist Chris Paul and his partner Dr. Krista Stogryn. This is a beautiful depiction of an individual encircled by the co-op and wrapped in the blanket of the community. Chris and Krista have given us fifty signed, numbered copies which we can give, as thanks, to major donors. We will have several copies available on March 10 at the AGM. For details please email:

And even newer

This gift from Chris and Krista is starting a trend of “Art for Wellness.” Writer and artist Phoenix Sophia has donated a fascinating piece of art which challenges each of us to enjoy and interpret it in our own way. Phoenix has donated it to be auctioned at the AGM. Another reason to be there.
