House of All Sorts

Sketch Rick Thomas - All Sorts.jpg

A few feet from Beacon Hill Park in Victoria BC are the boarding rooms of the ‘House of All Sorts’ that Emily Carr ran and wrote about. These were painful times for Emily, as money was scarce and so were the sales of her art. Keeping her art close,  she painted eagles and other beasts on the ceiling boards between the rafters of the attic. For the people of Victoria this was her gift. I took the images she left and embellished them, bringing them forward in colour and composition. Perhaps, but not in my lifetime, the images of the BC aboriginal art that she loved to paint will fly out of the attic for the world to see. By Rick Thomas
